grade 6-8

ARTIST JOURNAL

(Independent Lesson)
I worked one-to-one with a student in creating an art journal. I gave the student prompts to guide their thinking while they also developed their own ideas.

FUTURISTIC CREATURES

I co-taught this lesson in which students developed futuristic animals inspired by Dougal Dixon's book, After Man. The students then collaged their drawings with National Geographic magazine pages treated with CitraSolv, resulting in abstract effects.

CONSTRUCTED LANDSCAPES

(Remote Learning exercise)
Students were introduced to Paula McCartney and the concept of a "Constructed Landscape". Students investigated natural versus unnatural scenery, and gathered different objects to create their own. Once assembled, students took a close-up picture so their work resembles a real landscape.

EMOJI COLOR BLENDING

(Remote Learning exercise)
Students learned about the history and design of emojis. They then were introduced to color blending techniques using oil pastel, colored pencil, and chalk pastel. Students chose an emoji to recreate, practicing color blending techniques.

THE ART OF COMPLAINING

(Remote Learning exercise)
As we headed into remote learning, students and teachers had many complaints and worries. This exercise was designed to make productive use of those complaints. Students examined constructive communication of their complaints through artistic choices in design.
